PARIS, Aug 2 (Aktel Innovate) – French President Emmanuel Macron has come out in staunch support of the artists behind the 2024 Olympic opening ceremony, which has been met with both acclaim and controversy. Speaking to reporters in Paris, Macron defended the artistic vision of the ceremony’s creator, Thomas Jolly, who has faced severe backlash and even death threats following a provocative tableau that drew ire for its portrayal of Leonardo da Vinci's iconic "The Last Supper."

In a statement that underscores his commitment to artistic freedom, Macron expressed his dismay over the threats Jolly received, calling the situation "scandalous and heartbreaking." Macron emphasized the ceremony's success, asserting that it instilled a deep sense of pride both in France and across the globe. "The audacity displayed by the artists brought much-needed joy and reflection to many," he remarked.

The ceremony, which featured a controversial scene including drag queens, a transgender model, and a performer styled as Dionysus, the Greek god of wine, has provoked strong reactions from various quarters. The Catholic Church, far-right political groups in France, and some conservative figures in the United States criticized the depiction, which they viewed as disrespectful.

Paris 2024 organizers have since apologized, clarifying that the intention was never to offend but to celebrate a pagan feast linked to the gods of Olympus. Jolly, too, has stated that his goal was not to subvert religious values but to bring a fresh, imaginative perspective to the ceremony.

In his remarks, Macron emphasized that while criticism is a healthy part of democracy, threats of violence are unacceptable and contrary to democratic values. "The ceremony was a testament to France's commitment to artistic freedom and audacity," Macron stated firmly. "No justification can be found for threatening an artist."

Additionally, Macron touched upon the popularity of the Olympic cauldron, which has become a prominent feature of the Tuileries Gardens. He expressed openness to the idea of making it a permanent fixture, hinting at ongoing discussions about enhancing the city’s long-term aesthetic appeal.
