Apple enthusiasts and tech followers worldwide are on the edge of their seats as the tech giant gears up for its much-anticipated event titled "It's Glowtime," set to take place on September 9, 2024. The event will feature the grand unveiling of the iPhone 16 lineup, exciting updates on Apple Intelligence, and potential announcements regarding Air Pods, the Apple Watch, and more. Here’s everything we expect from Apple’s big day.
Apple Intelligence: A New Era for Siri and AI Integration
Earlier this year, at the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in June, Apple introduced its generative AI platform called Apple Intelligence, an approach uniquely tailored to Apple's ecosystem. Unlike other AI models from OpenAI or Google, Apple Intelligence uses a "small model" strategy, specifically trained on limited data sets to enhance user experience.
The latest iteration of Apple Intelligence is expected to significantly upgrade Siri, with features like better app integration, an updated user interface, and a new glowing display border when Siri is activated. However, only select models, namely the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max, will initially support Apple Intelligence, citing the limitations of older chips.
iPhone 16 Lineup: Bigger Displays and Enhanced Cameras
The star of the show, the iPhone 16 lineup, promises exciting new features and design changes. The iPhone 16 Pro Max is rumoured to come with a larger display, moving from 6.69 inches to 6.86 inches, thanks to smaller bezels that reduce the border size from 1.5mm to 1.4mm. The iPhone 16 Pro is also expected to see an increase in screen size, from 6.12 inches to 6.27 inches.
Camera upgrades remain a key focus, with a new glass-moulded lens designed to be thinner and lighter while boosting optical zoom capabilities, which do not suffer from image degradation like digital zoom. Leaked designs suggest a shift from a diagonal to vertical camera setup for the iPhone 16 and 16 Plus, along with a new “Capture” button for quick access to different camera modes.
Additionally, Apple may introduce larger batteries and easier battery replacement options to comply with the growing "right to repair" movement. The Pro models could also be the first iPhones to support Wi-Fi 7, the latest standard for wireless connectivity.
Apple Watch Series 10 and Ultra 3: Celebrating a Decade of Innovation
This year marks the 10th anniversary of the Apple Watch, and Apple seems ready to celebrate with significant updates. The Apple Watch Series 10 and Ultra 3 are expected to maintain a familiar design while offering larger displays (45mm and 49mm) and a slimmer profile. They will likely feature a new processor, possibly named the S10, which could pave the way for enhanced AI functionality.
Exciting health features, such as a glucose monitor and sleep apnea detection, are rumoured to be in development, although legal challenges may delay some functions. A budget-friendly Apple Watch SE with a plastic body may also make its debut during the event.
AirPods 4: Two New Models and USB-C Transition
Apple is expected to unveil two versions of the AirPods 4 next week. The entry-level model will replace the AirPods 2, while a more premium version will take the place of the AirPods 3. The premium AirPods 4 are anticipated to include features like Active Noise Cancellation and Find My integration, further blurring the line between the standard and Pro models. Both versions will switch from Lightning to USB-C ports, complying with new EU regulations.
There are also rumours of the AirPods Max 2, a successor to Apple's over-ear headphones, potentially making a surprise appearance four years after the original model's launch.
New Macs: A Possible November Announcement
While new Macs might not be on the agenda for the "Glowtime" event, recent reports hint at a potential release of M4-powered Macs in November. Supply chain constraints have impacted Apple's product release schedule since the pandemic, but there are expectations for a new iMac, Mac Mini, and MacBook Pro before the end of the year.
